NX Kardasi is a version of Cardassian language designed for fanfic usage and based on canon Cardassian words and Cardassian culture. It relies on latin characters that can be typed easily with a keyboard set as UK Extended, and is meant to be possible to write, read and speak:

Treason, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder.
>>

son nizakovira son sakaa̅n tuvai zadi daúm zay
[like treason, like beauty, shall its own mind]

Suffice it to say, I still have friends on Cardassia. I’m sure you’ll derive years of enjoyment trying to determine exactly who they are.
>> et’pimnetip makay, ot’kařdasiya vesalat

zemirit

va mu
[in such enough words, in Cardassia my network is continuously]
>>

zai’meŕa sonva das’ranlõu’i pasi’tenmelú zavahi ve mai’iri
[your credibility so years of fun’s to guess right which my side]

— Garak, ds9 S3E05 Second Skin

Now the question

I’ve written up a doc about the grammar of this language, which, while funny and written as a guide for aliens to learn Kardasi and integrate into Cardassian society, can be a bit tough for someone who isn’t a slut for grammar. To me, that guide is a very good reference, and it’s pretty much all I need to write/translate texts in NX Kardasi, but I was planning on making lessons that would be more accessible, with typical sentences, dialogs, exercises, etc:

Thing is, I don’t feel like there’s much of an interest for this in the fandom. I don’t see much curiosity or excitement, and as such I ask myself “why should I write lessons that nobody will use?” I don’t have the drive to do things that people aren’t looking forward to.

As such, if you would like me to produce those lessons, please leave a comment on this post or reach out to me to let me know about your interest.

And whether or not you care about this, please reblog so this post might reach more people who in turn might care.

If anyone has any questions or is curious about this project, you can reach out to me anytime as well. Translation requests are also welcome.

The episodes where we learn more about garak, bashir and odo’s relationships with their mentors are great and all, but I hate how the writers made them forgive,or make up with their abusers.

Garak and Tain made up. He should have left Tain in mental agony on his death bed. Told him what a failure he and the Obsidian Order were, but told Tain about how he himself found friends and a new family.

Bashir should’ve been “see ya later” to his abelist father as he was sentenced to jail. What Mr. Bashir did was not Julian’s fault and to make him feel guilty that he could a.) get his parents arrested and b.)that he did “get” his father arrested is shitty. He should have cut him off. (same with his mom?? like his mom sat there and let that happen!!)

And Odo…Odo making up with Dr. Mora, a man who abused him until he had no choice to turn is just??

If the narrative isn’t gonna make Kira forgive Dukat (which I’m glad she didnt forgive him, i’m not complaining bcs if she did forgive/befriend dukat i would’ve had a lot more to rant about) , then why make these three forgive people who were directly responsible for their lives. Or if not forgive, make up?

Like, Garak is freaking middle aged and still lived half his life in guilt wanting to please a man who abused him?? At least Odo and Bashir outwardly hated their folks, Garak was the worst still stuck on a man who wanted to kill him since he was a baby–and the narrative made them make up to some extent.

I really don’t like the whole “be the better person” or “learn to forgive. it makes you feel better” trope when it comes to abuse and like, all three of these men were abused in some way and still got off on some good footing with their abusers….

THIS.

howtofightloneliness:

I see so many fics about Garak and Bashir that are sweet or sexy, and they’re tons of fun, but what I don’t see enough of is the most compelling aspect of their relationship: the fact that Garak is a deeply damaged individual. He is much older than Julian, a different species, and from a totally different background. Where Bashir’s parents risked everything to enhance him and give him a fighting chance in the world, Garak’s father denied their relationship and turned Garak into an efficient wreck. He’s a liar, a murderer, a spy and a torturer, and even his good guy progression can’t change some of that. His charm and good-naturedness is a mask, and if he ever only showed Julian his beaming sarcasm and witty banter in the bedroom (as most fanfics would have us believe), then their relationship was never real. Even the TV episodes show more than that! In The Wire alone, we see Garak scream at and attack Bashir, lie to him repeatedly, and communicate his need for help through strategically placed clues. It’s the closest he can come to revealing himself, because that IS him. It’s all true, “especially the lies,” because that is what Garak consists of. His groanings about sartorial choices and human rituals are characteristic, but they don’t compose his character. I want to see more of the REAL Garak; and, if he can’t give that, more of Bashir’s real frustration at not receiving it.

Ok but consider:

minecraftcactus:

Julian is overwhelmed/excited and without realizing it he starts rocking/bouncing/flapping his hands and when he realizes he’s doing it he gets self conscious. He remembers his parents grabbing him and shouting at him to sit still and he feels bad that he couldn’t control it.

But his friends don’t look mad or bothered at all. Garak’s giving him the fondest smile, Miles just rolls his eyes and smirks because that’s just another thing lovable ridiculous Julian does, Dax tells him it reminds her of one of her previous host’s kids.

I feel like when Julian was taken to get “fixed”, they just enhanced him. They didn’t remove the autism. They just made him “better”. (You can try and tell me he’s not autistic but not only does he show traits of being autistic, but it’s pretty heavily implied in a few episodes.)

“May I please draw your OC?”

Reblog this message if you encourage anyone that wants to draw your OC to do so.  No need to ask for permission in advance.

Go for it.  Draw my OC.  If you want, I’ll even give you reference posts.  Go to town on it.

You are welcome to draw my OC and surprise me with the result.  Seriously.  In fact, I encourage it.  I will proudly display whatever it is you submit to me regarding my OC.  There is a chance that I will squeal about it for several days.

Even if you feel you aren’t good at whatever artistic adventure it is you do, please feel free to submit it to me.  I want to see what you have done.

I’d LOVE to see if anyones vision matches mine!

State of The Fandom

guljerry:

guljerry:

I woke up out of a dead sleep thinking about this fandom (Star Trek) and one specific phrase that most in the fandom know very well. It’s one of the most iconic phrases from the franchise and is at the heart of what Star Trek is: Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations.

This is not just meant as a statement that people exist in infinite diversity, in infinite combinations, but it means that this is good.

I’ve always kind of thought that the majority of Trekkies are probably such die hard fans not only because we love the characters and stories but also because the main theme and message of Star Trek rings true to what a lot of us believe, or give us a better future to strive for.

And yet I see horrible, ridiculous, childish, intolerant and disgusting things taking place in this fandom constantly. Things that fly in the face of Star Trek’s core message.

It’s possible I have held this fandom to higher standards than others given this message and maybe I was wrong to have done so.

I see or have been subjected to harassment over liking certain characters, or ships, or having certain headcanons–bullying, threats of violence, even death threats–literally over other fans enjoying things within the same fucking fandom. I have seen “Trekkies” being aphobes, homophobes, transphobes, ableist, sexist, racist, and generally disgusting to each other. I see “Trekkies” being hateful to other Trekkies over complete bullshit.

If you can’t even appreciate the diversity in liking FICTIONAL things then I have a difficult time believing that you are truly ‘woke’ and accepting of even greater diversity in real life.

If you are in this fandom to gather up minions and keep them in your sphere of influence with fear tactics and bullying, so that you and they may bully others who you don’t like for petty and arbitrary reasons, you’re not a Trekkie. You’re a toxic disease to this fandom and you are a blight on what Star Trek stands for and you need to step out of your pathetic little power trip and re-examine the message of the thing you claim to love so much and think about your own life and actions.

I’m not sure, however, that the people who create such toxicity and abuse within our fandom really do understand or appreciate Star Trek’s message. I am more likely to believe that they are simply doing the same thing a lot of ultra-Conservative Right Wing “Christians” do when they use Christianity to uphold their nasty little version of ‘the truth’ which is usually that they are holy and pure and everyone else is sinful scum. That’s called using something as a smokescreen.

Stop using the thing I love as a smokescreen to uphold your own misplaced sanctimony so you can abuse others.

Re-evaluate yourself and realize what you are doing and work to be better or get out of our fandom. Star Trek is not about your brand of hate and harassment and I am quite tired of it.

For those of you who are tired too I would ask that you reblog this post.

Don’t be afraid to speak or support the truth. If too many are afraid to speak up and reassert what we want this fandom to be for us and for newcomers and for the future then we will continue to watch it slip away into this nasty place. If you’ve been a target of these types of people reblog. Don’t be afraid. If these types of people have used you or bullied you into harassing others in the past and you have left that toxic influence (good on you): reblog. If you want to show that you do not support this behavior in our fandom, reblog. If you know that we can do better and deserve better than this then reblog.

We will not see a decrease in this toxicity if the people who do not want it to spread and grow are too afraid to stand against it.

If you want to fight for something then fight for the right thing not for petty things that some fandom ringleader has decided you should stand for.

Fight for a future of tolerance and better treatment of each other in this fandom where we can enjoy our fandom again, where we can be proud of it, where we don’t see good people deleting and leaving because they can’t cope or have grown so weary of certain groups of people harassing them. If we stand by and do nothing then we are contributing to the poisoning of our fandom.

Solidarity. Support. Remember who we are as Trekkies – and what kind of message we want our fandom to stand for.

LLAP, friends.

Reblog for night crowd.

*evil grin* Jack O’neal/Severus Snape, Not A Date/Forgotten First Meetings.

For this meme.

“This is not me asking for a date.” Jack knows Severus is unlikely to think he’s asking for a date, but it always helps to make himself clear, just in case. He’s not ending up another favor down for this, not when getting Severus into this damned shindig is as much a favor for him as not having to fend off anyone who thinks he’s there alone because he’s available.

Severus doesn’t return his wand to where Jack suspects there’s a sheath up his sleeve – he keeps his in a holster half-hidden by his side-arm, himself – but he also doesn’t hex Jack immediately, which Jack takes as a win. “How do you know where to find me?”

“You told me.” Jack gives Severus a flatly unimpressed look, waiting for him to lower his wand, and maybe, if Jack’s lucky, invite him in. “What, no ‘hello, how are you, Jack’?” He pauses, frowning at the lack of recognition. “Not even a ‘you still owe me for that business we don’t talk about’?”

“When?” Severus narrows his eyes, and Jack debates meeting his gaze. It might be easier, but at the same time, Jack hasn’t tested his defenses against a mind-magic user for at least five years. He has a lot to risk if he’s gotten as rusty with mind-magic as he has with other aspects of magic.

“1984.” If Severus doesn’t remember, Jack is going to have a discussion with someone in a position to have made that happen. Possibly with the business end of the wand he hasn’t drawn since… well, since before he got involved with the Stargate, anyway. Or maybe just introduce them to Daniel and Janet. He’d need to bring popcorn.

See previous post about not wanting this to sit for fuck knows how long.

Jack does not get his wish to introduce the person who fucked with Snape’s memory to Daniel and Janet, because Dumbledore is already dead.

The whatever it is that Jack is dragging Snape to goes about as well as any SG-1 mission – all ends well once the screaming and property damage is under control. The mcguffin is safely stashed, the bad guys wrapped up like a present, international incidents are smoothed over, and Snape gets a pile of NDAs and possibly a job offer with the SGC.

Jack’s not having used magic since before the Stargate project is in fact tied back to Charlie’s death, mostly that even with magic, he couldn’t save his son, and he’d been looking forward to teaching Charlie about magic. Even looking forward to the parts he wasn’t looking forward to (namely, Charlie visiting around different communities so his magical education – and the rest of his education – is well-rounded).

Snape may or may not take up the job offer.
– Pros: not anywhere near anyone who remembers the mess that was dealing with Voldemort twice, new and interesting potions ingredients, new and interesting potions.
– Cons: whole stacks of NDAs, America, military types, Daniel Jackson.
– He’s not sure if pro or con or possibly both: Jack, figuring out how off-world potions ingredients differ because of solar and lunar cycles that aren’t congruous with Earth, Muggles.

When or how they get together is after figuring out if Snape is going to join the SGC or not.

THIS IS BRILLIANT!

I want. Desperately. Severus to meet Janet Fraser. Because she’s going to look up at this beanpole potions master, he’s going to look down at this bitty healer, and they’re going to either be terrifying work friends or try to out-effective each other.

Poor Jack! D: Magic should always be fun. I DO LOVE the details of him keeping his wand holstered with his sidearm.

Potions as standard SGC offworld team gear. I’d LOVE to know if potions WORK on people from other planets! That’s a fun thing to contemplate.

Definitely terrifying work friends – I mean, have you SEEN the shit that SG-1 brings home on a distressingly regular basis? The regular sorts of illness and injury that happen anywhere, they’re both well-equipped to deal with, and sometimes there is competition on that front, but it’s mostly friendly.

But then SG-1 brings home another weird alien bug that mutates people or Jack downloads another Ancient database into his head or Daniel does something that may or may not get him killed AGAIN… and Snape and Janet ignore the competition thing, because figuring out how to fix the spectacular mess SG-1 has brought home this time goes so much better with both of them. And at least once, it wouldn’t have been solveable without both of them, because this is SG-1, and they do not know how to do normal.

After more than one of SG-1′s shenanigans, Snape has contemplated knocking them all out, tying them up, stealing Jack’s wand, and leaving them in an otherwise empty locked room for a while just for a chance to rest. And then Janet reminds him this is SG-1, they’d probably manage to find trouble even then, and please, do not give them a reason to try.
