Socrates said, “The misuse of language induces evil in the soul.” He wasn’t talking about grammar. To misuse language is to use it the way politicians and advertisers do, for profit, without taking responsibility for what the words mean. Language used as a means to get power or make money goes wrong: it lies. Language used as an end in itself, to sing a poem or tell a story, goes right, goes towards the truth.
A writer is a person who cares what words mean, what they say, how they say it. Writers know words are their way towards truth and freedom, and so they use them with care, with thought, with fear, with delight. By using words well they strengthen their souls. Story-tellers and poets spend their lives learning that skill and art of using words well. And their words make the souls of their readers stronger, brighter, deeper.

Morning, 28 April 17

I hope y’all have an awesome day, and those who are headed toward the end of it and bed sleep well when they get there!

So, I forgot to take my vitamin D supplement this week, and the last couple days have been… far less rocks fall, everyone dies than the entire three weeks while taking the supplement dutifully.

Could be the soybean oil in the gelcap. Could be the high dose on the vitamin D. Determining if the former is the issue is as simple as going to the grocery store, finding vegetable oil that is strictly soybean (as so many are), and getting the smallest possible container to take a suitably sized dose of it to match the size of the gelcaps. If the results are the same or remarkably similar, it’s probably the carrier, and thus there will be discussion with the doctor about how to get vitamin D without soybean oil carrier. If they’re not, then there will be discussion about getting my vitamin D levels up to normal in a slower and less brain-breaking fashion, because I value what’s left of my sanity.

(On the other hand, mom makes icing with vegetable shortening, which is hydrogenated soybean oil, according to its ingredients list, and I have had enough icing to be this sort of dose of soy three or four times over without this much lingering effect, so. Still leaning heavily to the vitamin D being the issue.)

Today’s to-do:

dishes (one load already done this morning, hoping to do a second) two! three! (and there’s at least two more drainer-loads to do, and I don’t think I’m doing them today. I’ve gotten well and away more dishes clean today than I’ll make dirty.)

clear dresser next to bed so that a tv can go there when dad gets a new one for him, and I can have the one he currently has. (there is a wii that no one else has used for a long while, and if I have room to use it – which I do not downstairs – I will, and every day. However, I need a tv for it to work.) done!

current row on the blanket done (now that the weather is warmer, maybe I can finish the last few rows without stopping every ten minutes to whimper because ow) (got a couple dozen stitches, stopped from frustration with fumbling the hook a lot) Just over halfway ‘round.

clean up clutter on floor in front of dresser between bed and shelves (I think I got all the trash up, and most things that need to be laundered). more done, and I need a broom that isn’t the one I use to sweep the bathroom and the litter that gets scattered across the floor by the cat.

words. dear fuck, words.

spreadsheet of doom: post more of the stuff to the DW com, queue up more tumblr posts

clearing of post-later-list: queue some of that ever-growing list, dear fuck it’s long, maybe I’ll get my queue run out to the end of May I’ve hit my limit for dealing with it right now. Maybe more later, or more tomorrow.

Didn’t get my morning post up today, because writing and then attempting to be a functional adult. I have at least achieved two loads of laundry, one of which is still in the dryer, but shouldn’t be a problem waiting until morning.

The last couple of days have been good for writing in the morning, then not so great the middle of the day, and another batch of words in the evening. I don’t know how long that’s going to last, but I hope it settles into a pattern, because it would be nice to have that kind of steady flow.

Bedtime 17 Oct 16

I should head to bed. Got words today, watched more DS9 (I’m almost done my rewatch. Nine more episodes to go), got some dishes washed. Remembered to ask dad to pick up gooshy food for the cat, and butter for me because I am picky about my butter, and am almost out of the good stuff.

Chilly day, but the furnace kept up admirably. Probably should have turned up the heat just a little, but I’m currently enjoying the cooler weather too much as yet to turn the heat back to it’s normal schedule, and holding it a bit cooler than I otherwise might instead. Soon, though, I’ll have to let it heat things up further, or I’m going to hurt too much to do anything, and that’s counter-productive.

Anyway. Sleepy time.

Hugs for everyone, and I hope you sleep well!

Eldsjäl

[’eldɧɛːl]

All people speaking more than one language run into those situations:
when you want to describe something and the word you want is stuck on
the other side of the language barrier with no passport.

My dictionary tells me “enthusiast” is the English equivalent of eldsjäl, but that’s not true. We have borrowed “entusiast” into Swedish and they’re not synonymous.

An enthusiast is someone who is deeply interested in something.

An eldsjäl is someone who burns for something, someone who devotes heart and soul, personal time and resources, to this one thing out of pure passion for what they do; there’s love in that word, there’s care and loyalty and pride in that word, and a bond with one’s passion that is much higher, stronger, and deeper than what enthusiast conveys.

Eldsjäl means “fire soul”. Please make this part of the English language.

Bedtime 20 May 16

Other than my GI tract being an evil little monster, today was pretty good.

Warm enough to open the windows and let the apartment air out, cat did not attempt to shred the curtains even a little, and I remembered to eat despite the owie.

Also, got words! Which is awesome. And the post that made me whimper yesterday is being… less intensely active today, which was good for my peace of mind.

Hugs for everyone, and I hope you sleep well when you get there!
