Series: Part 1 of Flame of Durin

After the Battle of Five Armies, Thorin collapses next to an unexpected ally, expecting that he won’t wake again. When he does, he has to deal with a cranky, snarky elf – excuse me, avari – politics and diplomacy that he’d thought he’d left for others, and learning to be King Under the Mountain in fact as well as name.

Ráva – said avari – is quite happy to watch, and be a pain in Thorin’s neck, though this is the first he’s met Thorin (or, indeed, any of the line of Durin). Even if being around Thorin does leave his head feeling rather like he’s the anvil for a particularly sadistic smith.

Unfinished, yes, but currently almost 50k, with the fourth chapter having slowed down a lot because there’s a lot that happens in the timeframe, but not a huge amount where Ráva is going to take notice. But there are others who do, so there’s figuring out what happens, and how much of it Ráva’s going to see, and how much he’s going to care about.

The first three chapters get them from The Battle of Five Armies almost to mid-winter. The next one might get them halfway to spring.

that’s the point, see? i love this canon character so much i just wanna be with them even though i know i won’t ever be, not only that but their universe is very fascinating and provides me an escape from the horrid reality that my real life won’t involve epic battles, lasting companionships, or thrilling romances.

She’d spent hours mapping the full length of him before, lost in the naked entwine of their tangled limbs, lips and tongue marking out particular spots of interest, teeth scraping over too sensitive flesh in her quest to unravel every ink marked inch of him.

Even here in public her fingertips continued their intimate tracing of the lines on the back of his hand, a tender gesture of innocent affection. But the way the tip of her nail scraped along his skin spoke of other things, more carnal and hedonistic in design. It sent little jolts of pleasure up his arm and down his spine with the promise of things to come. And from the curl of her lip as she dipped her face beneath the brim of her sun bonnet, she knew it too.

(You are going to make me get invested in these people I don’t even know yet, and I’m going to want to get my hands on the longer story however I can. I am not sure whether to curse at you or sing your praises or both. Both is good.)

Also, what does Double Agent Anakin’s respirator look like after he dumps the suit? I’m assuming it doesn’t cover his mouth since he can eat and drink? But then how does it work? Does he need a full on respirator to help him breathe (I think he does) or is it more like those little canules that just give some extra oxygen through the nose?

Ha ha, the complete lack of real medical information for the Star Wars universe strikes again.

I think he does need a full respirator, but I think with decent medical care he could probably go for brief periods without it (perhaps on oxygen tubes). What that looks like I’m not completely sure, but here’s a couple options:

  • It should be possible to install an internal respirator, or at least something much more physically unobtrusive. (Jenny Islander has referred to a portable oxygen concentrator in their post-Empire fics set in the Double Agent ‘verse: you can read them here.)
  • He could have a much more unobtrusive mask, which is how @fairandfatalasfair drew it in this amazing piece of art. In that case I think the mask would be removable for short periods of time, so he’d be able to eat and drink.

It’s also not clear how much medical technology in the GFFA could do with twenty-year old injuries. Because I do think that, had Anakin received proper medical care immediately after Mustafar, he could be in much better shape. So the question is whether GFFA technology can correct some of that negligence twenty years later, or whether they just have to work with what they have.

That’s part of what makes the Alliance medical team that eventually get their hands on him so furious. 

Not only was what was done to him medical torture, not only was it so subpar and neglectful they can do better on a retrofitted cruise ship with bootlegged equipment and one hand tied behind their back but on top of it the initial “care” and following 20 years of neglect means THEY can’t do half the things they would have been able to do had they been the first one to treat him. 

“THEY WERE HALF A DOZEN TREATEMENTS THAT WOULD HAVE GIVEN HIS LUNGS ANYWHERE FROM A 100% TO 70% RECOVERY!”

“I know Yessa”

“AND NOW HE’S GOING TO BE ON A RESPIRATOR FOR LIFE BECAUSE THE SCARRING IS….”

Yeah, this is pretty much exactly what I was thinking too.

Also, as awful as it is for Medical, just consider how Kadee feels about all of this.

After she’s free and realizes that Palpatine messed with her programming so that “adequate” would mean “optimal” when it came to Vader’s health, she’s incredibly pissed. And she definitely has plans to fix what she can and help Anakin actually function optimally – or at least, as close to optimal as she can get with limited resources.

Only he tells her she can’t. Because then Master would know.

And if Master knows, then Anakin would be dead. And even adequate is preferable to dead, as far as Kadee’s concerned. (She’s maybe a little bit attached. She doesn’t want her friend to die. And he’s adamant about fulfilling his oath, of course, so simply leaving Palpatine isn’t an option either.)

At that point, Anakin’s only been living with his shitty life support / medical torture suit for three years.

So he’s got to stay in it for almost another two decades. And Kadee has to let him. And watch as things that she could fix turn into things she can’t fix, as treatable damage becomes permanent damage.

She is, as you might imagine, extremely unhappy with Palpatine by the end.

Eran flopped down on bunk next to Mika.

“I need a drink. Strongest thing you have in your stash.” 

“Tought day?” Mika asked. Eran was one of the dozen med people assigned to Darth Vad Anakin Skywalker, and she had been hitting his stash pretty hard lately.

Eran nodded, face buried in the mattress.

“New nightmare from the suit of horrors?”  Mika teased good naturedly.  

“I found a bomb” 

There was a sudden hush in the barrack.

“what?”

“A bomb.” Eran raised her head, face hardening. “I found a fully functional bomb next to his liver. but that doesn’t really count as an addition to the suit of horrors,” She continued, tone rising in intensity with each word. “Because apparently it was already there.”

“…..”

“I heard bomb. Are we gonna blow up?” Eli’s voice pipe up from the top bunk. 

“No.” Eran said, voice back to numb. “Doctor Kelrn, who’s from Nar Shaddaa says the Hutts idiot-proofed those implants hundred of years ago.”

“Surgery’s schedulled for tomorrow.” She makes a grab for the bottle in Mika’s hand, he surrenders it without protest. 

Mika was on break in the refectory when he got the message
from Eran. Short, blunt, and no explanation: things must be bad.

Rec level. 3rd room.
Bring gloves.

He found her there, sweat-drenched and oblivious to the
world, wailing on a practice dummy that probably wouldn’t survive another five
rounds. He said her name four times before she heard him.

Eran didn’t say anything as she looked up. She didn’t need
to. Mika’s stash wasn’t going to be enough today, it seemed.

“Surgery’s done, then?” he asked, trying for a light tone
and failing completely.

Eran scowled, taking another vicious swing at the dummy. She
said nothing.

So this is Jaylen Kos, best friend to Bant Eerin’s Padawan, Llewas Albedo.

He’s an Iridonian Zabrak, a Padawan Learner to the Jedi Healers (who tend to train Padawans communally so he doesn’t have one specific Master, except perhaps Master Vokara Che, who leads the Healers.)

Jaylen became a Padawan shortly after Llewas did, following some…rash choices led to him fighting alongside his friend, and becoming a hero, at the Battle of Akoshissss.

Some other facts:

*His lightsaber is blue

*He has dimples. They’re fun as hell to draw.

*His hair is grown out because I headcanon that the Healers really don’t give too much of a shit if Padawans cuts it or not. I also just wanted to draw a Zabrak with luscious locks, sue me.

*He, Llewas, and Ahsoka were all in the same clan in the creche

I think his face turned out PERFECT. That is the most shit-eating grin I have ever drawn, and I am proud of it.

@ideordinal has made me impossibly in love with her Clone OCs, and since she said she has trouble visualizing how they look physically, I decided to draw them out for her using the descriptions she’s given me.

It also gave me an excuse to finally sit my ass down and draw a decent Clone face template, so I have that now if anyone wants  to borrow it.

Ricky, I hope you like them! I’ll get through everyone else in the next few days. I would tonight, but work. Early morning. Responsibilities. That stupid crap.

I was *this* close to giving Munchies blue eyes because he just seems like a watery fella, but you said brown eyes and I’m anything if not attentive when people describe characters… unless you give me leave to give him blue eyes, in which case I would in the blink of an eye.
