replied to your post “You know what the best thing about writing alternate universes is?…”

I had about the same reaction when they turned the mirror universe from “look what we are capable of if we don’t control our savage side” into “look what Other People can do to us if we aren’t aggressive”

Oh dear fuck, yes. *screams into a pillow*

I refuse to watch those episodes of DS9 because there’s only so much rage I can deal with at a time. Just. It’s not what a mirror-verse is supposed to be. Add to that the way they decided that the way to emphasize mirror!Kira’s evilness was to dress her up in bondage gear chic and make her blatently bisexual, and in so doing neatly demonizing bisexuality and kink in the process. *makes emphatic and rude gestures at the episodes*

(There’s an episode of Voyager that isn’t technically a mirror-verse, but Voyager through someone else’s historical lens, and just. Guh. That is what a mirror-verse should be, and it’s fantastic, and I kinda want to take it and play with it, ‘cause I made such happy squeaks while watching that episode.)

There are a lot of things that bother me with the Mirror Universe in DS9.  I’m not sure I can really words it right, and I only have half an hour until I’m on duty, so I don’t really have the time either, but I’ll try and give a few big outlines and fill in some details tomorrow morning or Sunday (when I’m not on weekend duty).

1. It’s not a dark mirror of what we could be (and thus what we should be scared of).  It’s what we are scared of.  “Mirror Mirror” from TOS showed an empire instead of a federation.  People were militarily subjugated and made to conform to the will of the rulers or else they were killed.  The 60s was definitely a “conform or die” era with the Cold War going on and all of the tension around Civil Rights and Vietnam.  “Mirror Mirror” was a warning of what we could become.

The history lesson Kira is given in the first episode with it in DS9 is basically “the empire demilitarized and was then taken over by the EVEN MORE MILITARIZED enemies.”  Nothing has changed except for who holds the guns.  It’s not a warning to watch ourselves.  It’s a warning not to trust those around us.  I hate it.

2. Opposite or just alternate?  Evil!Kira is crazy, pan, and completely oversexed.  “Smiley” is O’Brien.  Just, you know, with a history of slavery.  The characterizations of the alternates makes me really uncomfortable.  Definitely more on this later.

3. History won’t bring everyone together like that.  With the changes since TOS, there would have been a huge number more differences than Jake not existing.  It was something that bothered me in the original episode – it made no sense that the Empire and Federation were so completely different but still had a ship with all the same people on the same mission (more or less).  Probably more here later too.

Could I prompt a pairing between Kira and her alternate universe counterpart? When they met the first time sparks really flew, maybe you could write about them meeting again and experimenting further… And I hope this doesn’t violate your rules, honestly I’m not entirely sure lol

We talked about this prompt before, but I wanted to clarify some things again before I started the story for anyone else.

I don’t write sex scenes, so this will be cut short of nsfw territory in terms of sexual content. I also don’t classify this as incest (another thing I won’t write). I don’t even consider this self-cest, really, as Mirror!Kira and Normal!Kira are different characters psychologically that share the same face and body. So, stories like this are okay to ask for.

Warnings for psychological manipulation and near non-con.

Mirrored Interest

The Intendant got what she wanted. She always got what she wanted. And since she laid eyes on her other counterpart, the Kira in red, she wanted her. So she was going to get her.

After weeks of searching, she found a Terran with enough intellect and common sense that was willing to build what she needed without question. She had to eliminate a less than promising candidate right in front of her first, but once they were taken care of, the Terran provided her with the engineering and medicinal services that she needed. The device was built, demonstrated, and provided to Intendant Kira with no resistance. The Intendant gave her a permanent, promising position on Terok Nor with the intent of using her again. Then she left Garak in charge and transferred herself to the other universe without effort.
