… Ok, so not quite what I’d planned for the AU, but what the hell. It’s not like I’m paying more than lip service to MCU canon anyway, so why should I bother doing anything more faithful for CSI Miami canon?

Nick is enjoying the first vacation he’s had since he became director of SHIELD. Now, if a certain former CSI would stop trying to annoy him, everything would be perfect.

“You are not that cute, Speedle.” Nick doesn’t even turn away from the stove, looking up into the mirror that is on the wall to one side, glaring at the former CSI. “And you lack the tactical advantage my kids have.”

“I just can’t believe you’re wearing that apron.” Speed doesn’t flinch away from the glare, which Nick will privately admit is actually impressive. Even given that Speed spent quality time with SHIELD medical after being injured past what civilians could have fixed.

“It’s my apron. In my kitchen. Why wouldn’t I be wearing it?” Nick stirs the onions in their pan, noting the time before he looks over the pots to make sure their contents are still simmering suitably. It’s nice to have a few weeks where the only crisis is that they’re out of eggs or an annoying ex-CSI is trying to con him out of the cookies made for his daughter to bribe her history professor.

“It’s frilly and pink.”

“Jamie made it for me for my birthday.” When she was eight, and he’d been away from his family for ten months trying to sort out his new office and role in SHIELD. Alexx had just been happy he wasn’t in the sort of danger he’d been before the kids were born. Jamie and Bryan had wondered why he wasn’t home on the weekends like he had been before. “Are you questioning my daughter’s taste?”

Speed holds up his hands in surrender, though Nick can see the amusement lurking in his expression. “I didn’t mean to question Jamie’s taste.”

Just Nick’s, and he snorts, shaking his head. “Get out of my kitchen, Speedle, and go help the kids set the table.”
