Mostly I have been glaring at AO3 because there aren’t a lot of Janeway/Chakotay fics that don’t manage to set off a rant about JANEWAY IS NOT FRAGILE, DAMNIT.
I did, however, find a couple, and bookmarked them. (And why, why is it that the people who write pregnancy-fic are the ones most likely to avoid the descriptors “delicate”, “fragile”, or “small” for Janeway?)
I haven’t finished looking, though, and if I find more at some point, I’ll reblog this post with more recs. Both of these are 30-40k range, and I’m working my way down by word-count because I tend to prefer longer stories.

Admiral Kathryn Janeway and Captain Chakotay had one night together on Proxima station before he left on a ten month mission to the Yaris nebula. With a plan to meet in Venice when he returns, they both go about their lives, content to wait, without knowing that they’re tied to each other forever by a child neither of them had planned. After spending so much time apart, both by choice and by circumstance, do they know how to be together?
My Notes: There is also background lesbians, Nechayev gets to be more than an ice queen, and Seven of Nine being an awesome trip planner and travel companion.

This is an alternate universe story. It spears off mid-season seven, sometime after Lineage and before Workforce. Kathryn is on a supply mission, dealing with an obnoxious planetary leader. Chakotay decides to take matters into his own hands and a new journey begins.
My Notes: The main part of the story is getting them together and their first child, and the wrap-up of the rest of the journey home at the end is well-done, and it ends with a glimpse of Janeway and Chakotay several years later that is lovely.
Star Trek: Voyager AU with divergence points at S2E25: Resolutions, and S3E5: False Profits
A plasma storm comes through only three weeks into their stay on New Earth, leaving Janeway without any means to continue her research, and she and Chakotay have a longer wait for Tuvok to return with a cure. In that time, they become closer, and get in the habit of sleeping in the same bed. (How often that means there’s more than just sleeping, I leave to the reader’s imagination.)
Two months later, Voyager is pulled into the destabilizing Barzan wormhole along with the Ferengi, and are spat out at one of the former terminus points, past the Denkiri Arm in the Gamma Quadrant, putting Voyager a century from home at warp 9, and an unknown distance from the Idran system and the wormhole that would get them to Deep Space Nine in a fraction of the time. (Fortunately for the Ferengi, they’re not deposited at the same place as Voyager.)
Janeway is faced with two major decisions, finding she is pregnant (the virus she and Chakotay had been infected with on New Earth interfered with both of their birth control), and she must choose how to deal with that, as well as making the decision on how to get Voyager home.
One ex-Borg, one half-klingon, and one helmsman who is beginning to think he made a mistake team up to get their captain and first officer to stop with the UST, and just do something.
Seven would like them to stop being inefficient because their “hormonally-driven emotional desires are inadaquately fulfilled”.
B’Elanna wants to throw something at both Chakotay and Janeway, because the mutual pining thing is not fun to watch, thank you.
And Paris thinks he should not have interrupted their strangely amicable discussion that evening, but he’s game if it makes the captain happy, what do they need him to do?
Janeway and Chakotay start finding themselves with little malfunctions whenever they’re alone in a space together. Turbolifts stop between decks, doors won’t open, communications glitch, transporters won’t work. They get stuck in her ready room, his office, the briefing room, the mess hall, her quarters and his, cargo bays, the Delta Flyer (or Delta Flyer II, whichever), and at least once in sick bay while the Doctor vanishes.
No one, of course, can find anything wrong in any of the systems.
Nothing is achieving the desired results, and in a fit of frustration, Seven and B’Elanna shut down half the main systems, most of the backups, and manuver Janeway into chasing a glitch down a jefferies tube. Which they then seal off, and convince Chakotay to go “rescue” the captain. One jeffries tube is abruptly without power, communications, sealed at both ends, and the one tricorder Janeway and Chakotay have with them indicates that the atmosphere in the compartments on the other sides of the doors has been contaminated with something toxic.
Seven and B’Elanna leave Janeway and Chakotay there for eighteen hours or so while they get the rest of the ship back online, while carefully diverting any rescue teams. Whether or not anything actually happens in the jeffries tube, this is a last resort, because it was rather blatent in the attempt to get Janeway and Chakotay together.
(How much Janeway and Chakotay suspect, what the actual status of their relationship actually is prior to and after Operation: Closets, and what consequences the conspirators face is entirely up to anyone writing this, because if I add this to my pile, the damned thing is probably going to come clattering down on my head.)
If you could spend an entire day with any member of the Voyager crew, who would it be and how would you spend it?
It could be set in any time frame (Present day or in the Trek Universe), and money is not an option.
And if you can’t pick just one member…list each member and how you would spend your day with them. Because let’s face it, I couldn’t choose just one either 🙂
*tilts head and hums a moment*
Chakotay or Janeway or Seven of Nine.
Chakotay – before 2369, just something quiet, maybe camping, hanging out and enjoying the quiet of a nice day. Possibly geeking out about history, because. Get a hug before the end of the day, because I bet he gives the best hugs.
Janeway – sometime during the journey through the Delta Quadrant, probably after Scorpion and before Equinox. A day on the holodeck, doing something that gets her out of her head for a while. Possibly make pointed observations about her chemistry with her first officer, and why certain Starfleet regulations are honestly not good for her mental health on a long journey like the one Voyager is on, and that her crew needs her not to be neglecting her mental health just for the sake of some regulations.
Seven – get her dragged out of her own universe and spend it here, and introduce her to some friends and possibly to some specific stuff that I think she might find helpful in figuring out how to people that might not be available to her in her own universe and time.
*paws at the screen* Damnit. I want his clothes. I mean, Chakotay is a lovely person, and I keep wanting to have him sit down and let me draw him (because references are fantastic), but. I want the shiny pretty dark silver vest and the black underneath and just. *sighs, and makes more grabby hands*
(Ok, so it’s actually a leather jacket over black, and the silvery color is because lighting, but whatever. I want what my brain resolved. And I wouldn’t mind the leather jacket anyway.)
I don’t usually have OTPs for shows, though there are a couple notable exceptions. Babylon 5, Susan/Marcus (with Talia and Neroon to round out a polycule). And Voyager, Janeway/Chakotay. Others welcome, because polyamory everywhere, but. I remember thinking they were together when I was a kid-sized Morgyn who didn’t actually give much thought to romance anyway. (I’m not quite sure what my thought processes about it were at the time other than assuming that they would always be together. Which doesn’t have to be romantic, really.)
I’m watching this episode, and the interactions of Chakotay and Janeway keep making me think old married couple. People who have been around each other all their lives, and are comfortable with each other and just. There’s something there that makes me think lifelong friends or partners of some variation.
