vislorturlough:

the THING IS: classic scifi (star trek, doctor who) is about love and kindness and acceptance and exploration, and when it’s not entirely about that, it’s about overcoming evil institutions (b5, star wars). so like. why do bigoted, hateful, disgusting people always state that they’re a scifi fan, when all of the media they consume goes strictly against their toxic beliefs? seriously, why

I need help, folx. And no, I’m not asking for money. Matter of fact, I’ll pay you.

I’m trying desperately to leave the US, and I’m on the Next-To-Last-Step so I can apply for Immigration. I need to take the IELTS language test. I currently live in North Carolina. The only tests before 07/28/18 are on the West Coast. Literally the West Coast, Oregon and California. All I need is someone I can share the 40+ hour drive with, ideally I’d be going to Portland, OR for the test on 05/24/18, so I need help *FAST*.

You’d need to know how to drive stick, and have a valid license. Although, at this point the last bit is negotiable. I don’t care if I have to pick you up partway there and drop you off on the way back, I don’t care if you literally just want me to ship you to somewhere else along the line as long as I can pick someone else up less than 10 more hours in. I don’t care if I end up sharing the car with 20+ people over the course of this drive, I just want to go, take this stupid fucking test, and come home. I will cover food and gas, I expect sleeping, if any, is gonna happen in the car. It’s an old Subaru Outback, so it’s plenty spacious.

Please pass this on, the more people see this the higher the chance I won’t have to wait 2 goddamn months to take a test for a language I was born speaking. Shoot me an IM on here, or if you know someone who would fit these criteria and would be fine riding with a stranger who doesn’t have a Tumblr, have them email me @ ophie.opossum (at) gmail.com

@morgynleri ?

Unfortunately, while I’d be willing to drive with someone across the country, my ability to drive a manual/stick shift is very very rusty and was never good to begin with. Also, currently have a crud, and do not know how long I will be contagious, and do not want to pass this crud on.

Signal boosting, regardless, ‘cause maybe there’s someone among my followers who could fit the bill.

In honor of Mothers’ Day… any chance of getting a snippet from Anabasis with Shmi in it?

fialleril:

I warn you, anon, I don’t have any snippets with Shmi written yet that aren’t painful, but since several people have asked me for a Shmi snippet, I’m giving you this pain.

And as a bonus, you also get a glimpse of Ahsoka’s POV in the first section.

This snippet is super spoilery, so if you’re avoiding Anabasis spoilers for some reason, you probably want to give this one a miss.

Warnings for: harm to children, trauma reactions, panic attacks, hand trauma, mention of blood, mention of needles and injections

The door slid open.

Masters Yoda and Windu entered first, Yoda looking openly
troubled and Windu scowling. Behind them were two humans, a pale, work-worn
woman in her middle age, and an attractive young man with warm brown skin and a
smile that lit his eyes. He looked oddly familiar, like someone she knew not in
reality, but from images. His smile seemed actually genuine, but it fell when
he caught sight of Vader.

The woman beside him sucked in a shallow breath of air, her
face contorting with so many emotions that Ahsoka couldn’t begin to name them.
Her hand reached out, clutching thoughtlessly at the air, and she whispered,
“Ani.”

I am so, so sorry. Tea and soup and jello and 7-up and ginger beer, and a nice hot bath or shower maybe? I hope you feel better soon; all my best wishes!

Thank you all for the hugs and sympathy. 🙂

After a night of not actually sleeping so much as napping until 5am (and then 3 whole hours of sleep at once, whoo!), I feel less like death warmed over, which is nice. My sinuses are still full of ick, but I intend to go downstairs and get a hot steamy shower and steam my lungs and sinuses to try and help clear things out.

Tea and soup are still my friend, and I need to check the downstairs freezer and see if I still have a container of frozen sliced ginger because ginger tea sounds fantastic right now.

A Primer For Fundraising When You Don’t Know How To Raise Funds

copperbadge:

As the curator of Radio Free Monday, I see a lot of fundraising pitches every week, and as someone who also works in fundraising, I see a lot of information about giving cross my desk each day.

Sometimes I see a pitch on YouCaring or GoFundMe or other fundraising sites, or even just in a tumblr post, and I wince, because I know that the pitch isn’t as effective as it could be, but also that now is not the time to give the person a lesson in fundraising technique.

Some of the problem is that we are a community of storytellers, and some of it is that when you’re trying to raise money after a disaster in your life, you’re just not feeling super coherent. A lot of it, I think, is inexperience. Not just inexperience in raising funds, but inexperience in the kind of thing I deal with every Sunday night when I assemble Radio Free Monday: reading a ton of fundraising efforts and trying to discern the goal and needs of each.

Because of all this, I wanted to bang together a guide to asking for money for people who don’t usually ask for money. This isn’t meant to be any kind of professional essay on the art of fundraising and it’s not really meant for organizations, but I hope that it may be helpful to individuals and small orgs who have an immediate need and maybe need a voice of reason and order in a life that has suddenly become unreasonable and chaotic.

So here we go.

A Primer For Fundraising When You Don’t Know How To Raise Funds

Fundraiser week seven!

theotherguysride:

So back at it. I know I try to keep these hopeful for the future, with a side order of what I’m doing to get there.

The short answer? Everything I fucking can. I’m working hard for this licence, and I’m not about to let shit stop me. But I DO need help, and it always sucks when I have to ask.

I do want to say that everyone who has supported me so far: Thank you. From the bottom of my heart. You’ve made this thing so much less scary and insane. You’ve kept me eating too, which is a minor miracle these days.

This week started rough and is getting rougher. I’m not in a good financial position for things like rent yet. I’ve got some money coming to me at the end of…I think July, but that’s LITERALLY all going to fucking rent. On top of that I’ve been having a rough time with the brain weasels and I did some really scary math.

I owe 1500 in rent, I’ve got old medical bills sitting around, my car insurance is gonna fuck me hardcore, and I’m trying so fucking hard to stay bare minimum afloat.

This weeks starting budget is 10$ in the bank account, 11$ on the metro card, and 13$ in food stamps. That’s barely enough to get through today and tomorrow and not at all enough to get me to/from school for Wednesday. An INCREDIBLY generous person donated enough to cover my cell phone for more than one month, so that’s good through to July. To this person: May your life be easier and your home prosperous.

Donations going to my paypal are still the best and fastest way for me to get donations. I also adore any signal boosting y’all do for this cause, because honestly y’all are the reason I’m even okay-ish right now.
